On June 22, at the production workshop of Luochuan Qingyi Manor Biotechnology Co., Ltd., workers were sorting, labeling and packing apples screened by an intelligent fruit-sorting line. Photo by Chen Hongjiang, reporter of this newspaper.
On the morning of July 1, an intelligent electric self-propelled lifting platform for orchard operations was added to the orchard of Lu Hongzhen, a fruit grower in Luochuan County. Villagers are seen learning to operate the platform under the guidance of technicians. Photo provided by the interviewee.
When Li Xinan, known as "the first person to grow apples in Luochuan", established the first apple orchard in Yan'an in 1947, he could never have imagined that decades later, apples from Yan'an would "fly" into the vast outer space.
On June 5, 2022, Yan'an apples were sent into space for the third time. Lu Hongzhen, a Luochuan fruit grower with over 20 years of experience, watched the Shenzhou-14 manned spacecraft carrying Yan'an apples smoothly enter space on TV, filled with excitement.
"This is the greatest recognition for Yan'an apples.""Now our Yan'an apples will enjoy even greater fame."
Like Lu Hongzhen, people across Yan'an were thrilled and proud at the news that Yan'an apples had journeyed to space three times, expressing their joy on social media.
Over the past 75 years, Yan'an apples have grown from scratch and developed step by step. Today, the total apple planting area in Yan'an reaches 3.317 million mu. By promoting orchard grass mulching, bean-crop rotation, the "fruit-livestock-biogas" ecological cycle and green prevention and control technologies, the industry has embarked on a path of green, high-quality development. Yan'an has become the prefecture-level city with the largest apple planting area in China, transforming the "Red Sacred Land" into the "Capital of Apples".
Five Strengths: High Standards for Space-Bound Apples
Why were Yan'an apples chosen for space?
"Excellent resources, excellent quality, excellent bases, excellent benefits and excellent brand recognition." Wang Jianfeng, deputy director of Yan'an Fruit Industry Center and a fruit industry expert with over 30 years of experience, gave the answer. It is these five strengths that have earned Yan'an apples the reputation of "space apples".
"The space environment is complex, and sending fresh eating apples into space imposes strict quality requirements. Yan'an apples have a good taste, rich nutrients and good storability. Compared with fruits like oranges, they contain less juice, making them convenient for astronauts to eat in a weightless state," said Yao Zubin, deputy general manager of Yan'an Huasheng Modern Agricultural Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Huasheng Group).
